Founded in May 2012, these folk are selling roasted yaupon in tea bags, 15 bags for $12 with one gram per bag. This rate is $22.67 per ounce. They suggest brewing the yaupon as a tea, or a tisane, which is to pour boiling water over the one gram of yaupon and to let it steep.
Pictured is an experiment I did with yaupon I picked. On the left is the concentration which results from a decoction, boiling yaupon leaf in water for fifteen minutes - This particular batch was fifty grams powdered yaupon decocted in 3 quarts of water. The Yaupon was dried for 3 hours at 135 F. This is 17.6 grams per liter.
The middle brew is the same powdered yaupon , and was steeped as a tea 1.0 gram (~1/2 tsp) per cup of water which is 4.2 grams per liter or about four times less concentrated than the decoctions I use. Because the effeciency of extraction with a tisane is less than a decoction, the resulting tea is still weaker than 1/4.
On the right is yaupon steeped as a tea, 1.0 gram per cup, except this yaupon was rapidly roasted at 350F for 15 minutes. The color is pale yellow, and this brew tastes rather weak
1:2 Serial dilutions were made of the decoction to determine how much more concentrated it was than the tisanes. On the left are pictured the decoction and dilutions 1:2, 1:4, and 1:8. On the right are the two tisanes brewed. The Yaupon decoction which I brew daily is approximately 8 times more concentrated than the tea/tisane method of preparation. The decoction method of preparation extracts more of the dark compounds (polymeric polyphenols) than the tisane method.
